The music at your event should reflect the atmosphere you are trying to capture, and it should also capture you. I often find that when people are crafting their dance playlists, they’re concerned that they have to choose songs that people know, and in doing so, they compromise their personal tastes for their guests entertainment. However, when it comes to your cocktail hour, I always stress to my clients that this is where they can be uncompromisingly themselves.
So how does one craft that perfect playlist? Here is my advice.
1. Don’t Procrastinate
A good playlist takes time to curate, start working on your playlists a month ahead of time! This is one of the most fun parts of the planning process, so enjoy it! Wash some dishes, fold the laundry, grab a glass of wine kick back and jam out. Choose one song that captures the atmosphere you are trying to create perfectly. Just the one. Then start a radio based off of that song. If you are on any streaming services this should be very easy to do. Wait until you find that first song that makes you think “YES. This is the vibe” then begin. The song will find you, don’t worry if it takes a few skips…Immerse yourself in a mindless activity, don’t focus on the music too intently. The right song will always interrupt what you are doing to make itself known.
2. Be Picky
Now that you’ve picked that first song, you have your point of reference. Let’s try this together. I am currently working on a beachy cocktail hour playlist for the wedding I am performing at in Hawaii next week. The first song I choose is: Matoma’s Reimagination of “Free Fallin by John Mayer the (Tropical Mojito Remix)”. It perfectly captures everything I want my audience to feel musically, lyrically, and atmospherically. It also reflects my own personal music tastes. I search through my personal likes first and build a solid base with songs that I know and then I let the radio takeover. I want happy house with an island flair. Total mood booster. It may be snowy outside in Seattle but damn if I am not already Knee Deep (Bobby Brush Remix) in the water somewhere dreaming of this beachfront wedding.
3. Play with the Order
Order can make a difference if your aim is really to create that perfect playlist. It allows you to dictate the ups and downs of the hour as well as the ideal transitions between songs. Sometimes it’s not that a song doesn’t belong in a playlist, but perhaps in a different part of it. I always tell my clients, it’s your job to make the requests, it’s my job to figure out when is the best time to play them. In my beachy cocktail playlist, I decided to start with a pretty upbeat track, Felix Jean’s Honolulu. My aim is to ride the wave of the excitement from the ceremony and then ease them back into a more mellow mood for conversation. Finally I pick things up gradually at the end so that they are starting to feel those mojitos in their feet. Mix it up, try things out! Have fun with it, it’s all about the feeling and flow of energy you are trying to create.
4. Try Something New
Don’t just stick with what you know. Challenge yourself, find a new artist that you’ve never heard before! Do some music discovery! The worst thing that can happen is that you find some groovy tunes to make you move. Don’t be afraid to play music in different languages, it can really add an interesting texture to your event, and I am always a fan of exposing people to culture through music.
5. Make it diverse
Variety is important to a good playlist. You’ll notice similarities and elements that tie your choices together but make sure that you have a good variety of female and male vocalists and that you don’t pigeonhole yourself into one genre! In my beachy cocktail hour, it definitely rests it’s laurels on tropical house, but I included a sprinkle of country/folk, some traditional hawaiian music, an appropriate pop song or two, and some island remixes of popular songs. Take a listen for yourself, make a mojito, and put yourself in one hell of a mood. Enjoy!

You’ve made one huge decision…to get married! Congratulations! However, with that one decision comes about a million more now that you’re planning your wedding. Fear not! With most research made possible through online sleuthing, you’ll be done before you know it. (Well not really but just go with me here.) Let’s tackle one question together: Do you need to hire a videographer for your wedding?
Another way to approach this question is: Will you regret not having one? Since this is one important day, it makes sense to want to be able to remember it clearly, and to be able to share it in the future. Photographs are incredible ways to relive memories, but being able to have moving footage (and audio!) is a whole nother immersive experience.
You Probably Won’t Remember Much From Your Wedding Day.
With the joy, excitement, possible nerves (and tears!), it may prove to be impossible to clearly remember your big day. Many couples report that it was all one big and beautiful blur. Details will inevitably be lost in all the hustle and bustle.
When you’re in the moment, you’re in the moment, so small but wonderful things, like the sound of a loved one’s laughter, may be quickly forgotten without a videographer.
Aren’t You Just Plain Curious About How You Looked?
Part of the fun of a wedding is being able to both look amazing together and there’s no shame in wanting to see that on film! Another advantage is for the bride to be able to see herself walking down the aisle from her friend’s and family’s perspective (and grooms!) Also, the ability to hear each other saying your vows out-loud is something that just can’t be captured without a videographer.
With Video You Can Be The Stars Of Your Own Little Feature Film.
With the addition of music, colored tones, and the careful direction of a videographer, you can create something pretty magical. Gone are the days of shaky, boring, and unartistic wedding videos. The quality of film is much much higher than it used to be and videographers are more aware of personal style, creativity, and uniqueness.
Sharing Is Caring
Having a video of your wedding grants you the ability to share your day with others (along with each other) for years to come. Think about that for awhile. For anniversaries in your future, what a great way to spend an hour or two of it! If you plan on having children (or grandchildren) you will be able to share this day with them. Also, if a friend or family member wasn’t able to be with you, what an easy and thoughtful way to share your wedding with them.
Hey, What About The Drawbacks?
A common concern is that the videographer will be in the way. This may have been true in the past when cameras were enormous, but this is no longer the case. Videographers will be dressed like any other guest which will also help with blending in.
Being camera shy can be another concern for some couples. A videographer will be moving around, interviewing guests, and just generally in the background making it easy to be forgotten about.
Budget is another worry for some, but it just may be less than you think! Many couples will cut something else in their budget to make it possible. A common example is asking your guests to become your photographers! This usually creates unique, candid, and personal photographs.
Ok, ok you’ve convinced me! Now what?

Define your needs prior to looking. Do you need the photo booth rental for 3 hours, or all day? Is self- serve sufficient, or do you need an onsite assistant? Do you want just digital sharing, or also print outs and DVDs? And don’t forget about the backdrops, props, size of the booth, photographers, and lighting.

The photo booth rental you book with may depend on the audience of the event based on the different package themes offered. For example, many photo booth rental services offer packages specifically for weddings. Many also have theme packages such as “hipster” and “millennial” that target various age groups. Choose a company and package that is appropriate for your audience size, age, and style.

There are probably a ton of Buzzfeed articles out there about how to DJ your own wedding – and that’s great. But remember, after you read “12 Egg Tips and Tricks They Teach You in Culinary School” you aren’t any closer to becoming Gordon Ramsay. You probably aren’t catering your own wedding, so don’t DJ it either. The rise of the iPhone DJ has created many issues for the modern-day wedding DJ and has made crowds increasingly more difficult to please. DJing my first wedding back in 2013 was honestly one of the most terrifying things I had ever done. All I could think about was ruining a couple’s special day and how if everything didn’t go perfectly that hellfire would rain down upon me in the form of the dreaded bridezilla. Fortunately, it was an incredible evening, and everyone had a great time, but the most terrifying part of the entire night was playing the music for the ceremony. Being a professional wedding DJ, is a lot of responsibility (but of course it’s highly rewarding).
There is a ton of prep work that goes in to being a Wedding DJ. But the preparation is done over the course of years, and while your DJ will do specific work for your wedding, they have already done a lot of the prep work in their music collections by trial and error of gauging reactions to songs played for crowds. DJ’s are constantly reading a crowd, at times, they make mistakes and lose that crowd.
